Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Alaska Public Health Training Network?
APHTN is a distance learning program for training public health staff. Based in the Primary Care and Rural Health Unity of the Section of Community Health and EMS in Juneau, it broadcasts programs from the University of Alaska Southeast Distance Education System. APHTN focuses on bio-terrorism but can show a variety of health programs.

When do the programs air?
APHTN programs air on Thursday mornings. Start times and program lengths vary but most programs start around 9am. Occasionally there may be more than one program shown. To find out specific dates and times, please see our registration page.

Where can I view Alaska public health training?
Our programming is available in most major population centers in Alaska. If you can view ARCS, Gavel to Gavel, or the PBS Superstation, your community is able to show our programming as well. Communities who don't carry our signal can receive assistance from UAS Media Services to begin. If you need more assistance, please read our more complete technical assistance guide (PDF). You can view the programming at home or at a designated site. Many major hospitals and medical centers are already reserving rooms for their communities. Check for a designated viewing site in your area when you register.

How do I get involved?
The first step to getting involved with our program is to register. Sign up as a new participant and begin looking at the different upcoming programs. When you find one you are interested in, register for the event. If your community does not have a designated viewing place, you can register to watch at home. If you are interested in hosting our programming in your community you can sign up as a site manager. Site managers reserve rooms for viewing, set up a television for viewing, and perform a few other simple duties. Signing up as a new participant, becoming a site manager, setting up viewing at your site, and registering for a class can all be completed on our registration page. You can also look at other training opportunities in Alaskan communities and several outside of the state. We have easy to follow tutorials to help you through some of the registration page procedures. Please choose from the following list of PDF documents:

Becoming a new participant
Registering for a class
Becoming a new site manager
Registering your viewing site to show a program
Searching other training opportunities
Becoming other opportunities contributer
Adding other opportunities

What other services does APHTN provide?
While we focus on bio-terrorism programming, we occasionally show a program at the request of another organization for a fee. If you are interested in this option and would like to know more about it, read through our broadcast policy. If you miss a program, are unable to view it in your community, or would like a program for a special training need, check out our extensive lending library. You can also search for other training opportunities on our registration page by choosing the parameters you want. We are now in the process of obtaining TRAIN, a service which will help you search for more specific training from a wide range of possibilities. For more information on TRAIN, check out our TRAIN page.
